Post–tension cables are used in concrete construction to allow thinner slabs and greater span lengths between support columns. These cables, composed of steel wires inserted into a plastic sheath, are subsequently “tensioned” and grouted after the concrete is poured.

Post-Tensioned cable Failure Identification
Signs of post-tensioned cable failure can include the following and will require immediate repairs to restore strength and integrity to the structure:
- Broken strands which can be seen coming out of the structure
- End anchorage which has lifted out of the concrete
- Cracking concrete which is running parallel to the strands
- Excessive deflections
- Punching shear cracks in slabs
- Diagonal shear / flexure cracks in beams and joists
Typically, however, there are no outward signs of distress and installation of inspection recesses is the only way to check if cables are still tensioned. Installation of inspection recesses involves chipping into the underside of your concrete slab and exposing small portions of cables for review. Exposed cables can be reviewed at inspection recesses to check for corrosion and to see if they are broken.

Miyagi Construction can also review your structure and complete appropriate waterproofing upgrades that will reduce further corrosion related deterioration within your post-tensioning system.
Barrier cables used in parking garages are similar to post-tension cables in concrete slabs and are subject to similar deterioration mechanisms. In some cases the failures occur quicker since the cables are directly exposed to the elements and do not have the added protection provided by concrete cover. Replacing barrier cables and anchors requires the same expertise as repairing post-tension tendons.

The cut cable can be pulled and replaced and the sleeves on the others will need to be repaired. It is not any easy or cheap process but it is reparable. You absolutely need an engineer to design the repair. They may say replace the cable or they may add some steel reinforcement in that area or both.
