Targeted Parkade Concrete Repairs in an Active Facility

Parkade repairs require more than placing new material over damaged concrete. The unsound concrete must be clearly identified and removed back to a suitable substrate so the new repair can bond to sound concrete. Access, dust, traffic and public safety must also be carefully coordinated.

For this healthcare parkade project, repair areas were identified and marked before removal began. The work was completed in controlled stages to help maintain safe access and support ongoing parkade operations.

Galvashield XP Embedded Galvanic Anodes

As part of the hospital parkade repairs, Miyagi Construction installed Galvashield XP discrete embedded galvanic anodes at selected repair boundaries. The anodes were connected directly to the exposed reinforcing steel before the concrete repair material was placed.

The zinc within each anode corrodes preferentially to help provide corrosion prevention or corrosion control to the adjacent reinforcing steel in the existing concrete. This helps mitigate ring-anode corrosion—commonly called the halo effect—around the interface between the new repair and the surrounding parent concrete.

Galvashield XP is a localized, low-maintenance corrosion-protection system that does not require an external power source or system monitoring. Why Parkade Concrete Deteriorates

Parkade slabs are exposed to vehicle traffic, moisture, de-icing salts and temperature changes. Water and chlorides can reach the reinforcing steel through cracks or porous concrete. As the steel corrodes, it expands and can cause cracking, delamination and concrete spalling.

Effective repair begins by understanding the deterioration and establishing a sound repair perimeter. Depending on the condition of the structure, the work may include localized concrete replacement, crack injection, protective coatings or a complete parkade restoration and waterproofing system.
